South Molton Struggle

Seven Blues travelled the short distance to South Molton to run this years Struggle. Mild, damp conditions proved ideal for the event which was very well organised. Lorrie Woolgar was our fastest lady on the day, winning the FV50 category with Patricia Martin putting in an excellent performance in front of her school supporters to take the trophy for second FV50.
With a hog roast to finish and a useful goodie bag including a jar of local honey, this is an excellent and reasonably priced race which deserves better support from the Blues next year.

Blackdown Beast
Sunday 29 January 2012 Liz Warner, Mary Pool and Sue Pennington
A little over 16 miles of mud, self navigation, mulled cider, pasties and more mud. sounded like fun… And on the day, it was. Sludging through boggy marshlands, through farmyards, across fields, stiles and gates made for a great way to spend a few hours. fastest time was just under 3 hours, slowest was 5.5 ( we did 3:20) but the point was never to race or bag a PB. The checkpoints at the 3 pubs put paid to that. The mulled cider at 7 miles softened the blow of the tough terrain but the pasty would have been a risky gamble that Sue and I passed on. Except Mary who bravely polished off her pasty in record time!
So if you are up for a challenging off road social run (not a race) with not a marshall in sight ( only white drawing pins strategically placed on gate posts) leave your best running shoes at home and enter in the spirit the run is intended for…. You’ll be glad you did.

Christmas Cracker Weston-Super-Mare
11 December 2012
Despite the forecast of heavy rain, a coach full of enthusiastic Blues arrived at a dry and calm Weston-Super-Mare in time for the 2011 Christmas Cracker. Within 30 minutes of our arriving, the town was awash with fancy dress Snowmen, Santas and Sexy Elves prepared to take part in one of the Southwest’s most popular themed 10k’s. Mike (the Grim Reaper) Gilmore was in the prizes again this year, taking third place in the fancy dress competition but sadly there was no room at the Inn for our own Nativity ladies who came up against stiff competition.
The first 5k of this race takes place on the beach and again the gods were kind the sand was firm and the going was good. In fact conditions were so good that our own Kevin Heywood took full advantage, winning the race in 31 minutes and 31 seconds a new course record!
As a warm down we climbed to the top of the College building to join the queue for baggage, four floors below (something went wrong there) and several hot showers later (yes hot) we retired to the new Wetherspoons (Cabot Court Hotel) for refreshments.
Our friendly coach driver collected us at 5.15pm for the long journey home, during which we were treated to Al’s special raffle where everyone was a winner, except Paul Sturtidge who managed to give away the entire contents of a bottle of Glenmorangie (for which many of us were very grateful… hic)
Once again, Heardy did a magnificent job with the organising and I’m sure that in twelve months time another coach full of Blues will be trundling up the M5 again. Full results of this year’s race HERE

Tavy 7
Sunday 23 October 2011
Five Blues ventured over the moors to take part in this years ‘Tavy 7’. The event was once again excellently organised although a strong breeze made sure that there wasn’t a changing or registration tent to be seen the race officials had to rely on stone paperweights to keep down the piles of race numbers which were individually issued on the day. A new seven mile course which managed to steer clear of most of the abundant Dartmoor gradients culminated at the start where a 100 metre downhill dash made for a fast finish.
Blues results were Jimmy Murray 46:26 (16th), Robbie Murray 55:35, Paul Sturtridge 56:33, Patricia Martin 1:05:33 (PB), Doug Jenkin 1:05:33

Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest
Sunday 2 October
Liz Warner and Rachel Williams took part in this crazy event in Cardiff. Liz reports as follows:
Temporary insanity made us enter the Men’s Health survival of the fittest in Cardiff but the fantastic experience we had will make us sign up again without hesitation.
A 10k run (they lied, we passed the 10k marker way before we finished), was interspersed with obstacles after every 1k. First the giant hay stacks to climb over, then a slanting wall being hosed with baby oil got the adrenaline kicking in followed by a scaffolding ladder and a couple of land rovers to go over/under/ through. A bit of slalom sprinting and a wade through the murky river Taff and a slippery climb up the bank. A bit of a breather running to the next obstacle of an army assault course- carrying sandbags over our shoulders and on to the scramble nets, monkey bars, tyres, rope ladders, you get the idea. Next stop, the Millennium stadium, no music to be heard as we charged up to the top level, along the inside of the arena and back down again. Now a bit of light relief inflatables! saw one guy hobbling away after a little too much childish play. Back through the river, and feeling like we were almost home and dry ( well not dry, I fell in the river) only to find we had to hurdle the barriers, grab a traffic cone and navigate our way through tyres and back over the barriers.
Finally the end in a sight…. The 8 foot Wall of Fame and an outstanding cheer of encouragement from the spectators. Up onto the wall and VICTORY!! It’s gotta be done.

Bideford Blues HASH
18 August 2011
The first Bideford Blues Hash proved to be a great success with a pack of 21 runners searching out a trail, laid on the ground in in flour (not flowers, Pam) which led them through the woods towards Appledore shipyard. Numerous ‘falsies’ (false trails) kept the FRB (fast running bastards) busy whilst the ‘Knitting Circle’ (runners doing more chatting than running) caught up. Snooty cries of ‘On-On’ from our chairman and ‘Hash Master’, Anthony kept the pack on the right course which ended up in the Bar at the Blues (surprise, surprise). Numerous ‘down-downs’ followed as fines for such indiscretions as wearing red shirts (shock, horror) and showering too quickly (Mark) were dished out by ‘Religious Advisor’ Anthony (busy lad, wasn’t he). Mention of a Christmas Hash was also made … On-On!

Grizzly Sunday
13 March 2011 – Report from Andrew Pearson
Just a quick mail to let you know I completed the Grizzly on Sunday a 20 mile + race around Seaton and Beer, full of bogs, hills, trails and cliffs and then more bogs, hills, trails and cliffs. North Devon marathon aside it’s probably the hardest race I have ever done hence the time of 3:19:58 which is a couple of mins over my pb marathon time but 6 miles shorter!!! It was called valley of the bogs this year and it really lived up to it’s name!! all runners were covered in mud and hosed down by the firebrigade at the end. I managed to come in 155th of 1675 finishers. I would definitely do this race again it was really well organised with a carnival feel to it. This report is only a small glimpse of what was a fantastic day (The weather was brilliant to!!)

South of England Cross Country Championships
Saturday 29 January 2011
Kevin Heywood finished an incredible 8th after being left behind when the starting gun went off prematurely. He and hundreds of other runners were still queuing and found themselves at the back of the 900 strong field. Bideford finished in a highly creditable 18th place out of 93 teams thanks also to very good performances from Steve Gallienne and Mark Jenkin.
Braunton 10
Sunday 23 January 2011
Excellent turn out from Blues runners and Kevin Heywood won with a new course record! Weather typically Braunton cold and sunny. Hills still there and big!
Rumours were going round that the race was nearly cancelled due to severe ice on some of the hills. The ice was still there in places but was nowhere near as bad as the day before and the marshals did an excellent job of letting us know where the worst parts were. The weather was kind to all the runners. They were treated to a bright, sunny but not too cold morning which provided excellent race conditions (If you exclude the very patchy ice) that Kevin Heywood made the most of, setting a new course record and scooping first place overall. Kevin wasn’t the only one to come away with a dust gatherer (only joking I’d love one!!!). Martin Colwill and Alec Mclaren came first in their age categories. Gary Suggate earned himself a new PB and the Bideford men, Kev Heywood, Martin Colwill, Gary Suggate and Chris Stone one the 2nd place men’s team prize. Apparently the presentation room might have been a little whiffy due to the poor showering and changing facilities provided at the North Devon track there were two showers, one of them broken and the other one was a mere trickle so most people decided not to bother. Also half the changing room was full up with high jump mats! Enough moaning now. Other than that it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience from start to finish.
Results: Kev Heywood 1st 51:47 (course record), Martin Colwill 8th 1:02:28 (1st vet 40), Gary suggate 13th 1:04:04 (PB), Chris Stone 18th 1:04:46, Stuart Philps 36th 1:08:32, Andy Pearson 40th 1:10:06, Barrie Huxtable 43rd 1:10:39, Neil Marke 44th 1:10:41, Alec Mclaren 52nd 1:11:44 (1st male 50), Mark Gilbert 62nd 1:13:25, Paul Sturtridge 67th 1:14:16, Steve Saunders 88th 1:17:19, Sue Pennington 137th 1:23:32, ?? Marsh 151st 1:25:56, Mary Pool 172nd 1:28:19, Carol Davis 173rd 1:28:30, Mark Palmer 189th 1:32:20, Kathryn Guard 190th 1:32:21, Liz Warner 191st 1:32:22, Lorrie Woolgar 193rd 1:32:57, Kay Eastwood 232nd 1:53:14. (thanks to Andy Pearson for report).
Western League Cross Country Bideford
Sunday 16 January
WET and MUDDY… and a success! These are the words to describe this years cross country event in Bideford.
Karen, Lorrie and Kay deserve a special mention for braving the conditions to set out the course, along with the gang of marshals, without whom the races could not have taken place … and gang-master Liz too. Special thanks also to the kind lady who offered to assist in the kitchen and nearly bit off more than she could chew (sorry I don’t know your name but we promise to get you some more help next time).
Christmas Lights Club Run
16 December 2010
25 Blues of all ages wandered the streets of Bideford wearing festive hats during their club run on Thursday. They were in search of the street with the best Christmas lights. Although lights were a little harder to find than in previous years, some fine examples were found in Lime Grove, College Green and Meadow Park. A good time was had by all!
Christmas Cracker
Sunday 5 December
The annual club excursion to Wyvern set off as usual just after 8am on a very cold and frosty morning. The atmosphere on the coach could only be described as somewhat subdued compared to what was to come in a few hours. Race wise the 34 runners that took part for the blues had to endure soft slightly sinking sand under the pier at the start and in some places several skating rinks as the race continued inland. Jimmy Murray was first home for the blues with yet another pb. After the race was over the yearly trip to a Weston-super-mare Public house was inevitable and everyone spent the afternoon having more than a few sociable halves. Before we knew it it was time to get back on the coach with the earlier subdued mood changing noticeably after more than a few drinks each. Heardy as usual did a superb job with the raffle and the presents and to sum it up I’m sure everybody that went would agree that a great day was had by all. It’s also worth mentioning Kay and Liz won the fancy dress runners up prize dressed as Mary Poppins and the chimney sweep. Thanks Heardy for a great day!!! (thanks to Andrew Pearson for the race report). Full race results HERE.
Club Run
Thursday 11 November 2010 from the clubhouse
Despite howling winds and the threat of downpours, around 25 club runners braved the elements for our first ‘we wana be tugever’ club run. Recognising that some of our lighter junior runners would probably have ended up taking off if we had run the ‘Two Bridges’ a more sheltered (I don’t think so) route around town was selected. Despite some imaginative variations to the proposed route we all ended up back where we started … and it didn’t rain! Next club run is scheduled for 6pm on the 16 December and will be a Christmas light spotting special … we’re anticipating snow!
Dublin Marathon

In baking hot conditions eased only by the coastal breeze Peter Hockin led the field to finish 1st in 3:34:54 whilst Jimmy Murray came home 15th in 4:01:50, Andrew Pearson finished 20th in 4:13:28 and Charlie Davis finished 23rd in 4:14:49. Yeo Mill Yomp, Exmoor
Sunday 20 June
Martin Colwill took first place to retain his crown in a time of 1:11:05 at this 10.25 mile event which Martin reckons is a little tougher than the Doone. Steve Heard came home in eighth place in 1:17:21 Both good times particular taking into account the sunny, hot conditions. Martin is keen for more Blues to take part next year … except Peter Hockin π

Sunday 18 June
Jimmy Murray flew the flag for the Blues, finishing 44th out of 455 runners in a time of 31:38.
Ruby Run
Sunday 13 June 2010
A good turn out from the Blues and a one-two for Peter Hockin and Martin Colwill on a warm summers morning. Peter came home first in 1:16:00 to win his fourth Ruby Run, over 3 minutes in front of Martin who was clearly not trying hard enough π Amongst the other notable performances was a sixth place for Chris Stone and a battle between Paul Sturtridge, Sue Pennington and Jo Bedlar which Jo and Sue won using a pincers movement to come in two abreast (Jo was slightly in front of Sue) beating Paul by 4 seconds. Jimmy Murray managed 11th, Stuart Philps 16th, Andy Warner 24th and Andy Glover 40th.
Ian’s Big Run
June 2010
Ian Clewes mega-marathon arrived in Bideford on Thursday evening, 10 June. Ian was accompanied by fellow Blues members for the last few miles of his days 29 mile jaunt from Hartland. He was running the South West Coast path at a rate of more than a marathon a day and was due to finish at Minehead on Sunday 13th June. Ian ran for Cancer Research UK and has already raise over Β£2,300 online with a further Β£1,000 or two in the collecting tins which he rattled along the way.
Cubert 5 Miler
Tuesday 8 June 2010
Martin Colwill travelled to Cubert near Newquay and may have been the only North Devon runner if not the only Devon runner amongst 550 Cornish finishers. A nice evening, bbq and a unique Camping chair for every runner different !! Martin was pleased to come back with a 5 mile pb of 28 mins 22 secs.
Dartmoor Discovery
Sunday 6 June 2010
Jimmy Murray finished this 32.2 mile toughie in 4:33:35, finishing in 13th place and 13 minutes faster than his previous time for the event. This is probably due to the fact that Jimmy has been abducted by aliens and replaced by a look-a-like, half his original size … or it may be due to some pretty serious dieting!
Crediton Crunch
Sunday 23 May 2010
Tim Lane (50:19) and Alan Heard (52:32) joined 216 others in the sweltering heat to take part in this hilly 6.4 mile race.

The Challenge: Starting on Friday May 21st 2010, Blues member Ian Clewes will be running the whole 630 mile South West Coastal Footpath from Poole Harbour in Dorset to Minehead in North Somerset. The route includes ascent and descent of 114,931 feet (almost 4 times the height of Mt. Everest) which Ian hopes to complete in about 4 weeks … this means running the equivalent of a marathon coupled with ascent and descent of over 4,000 feet every day. You can follow Ians progress at http://iansbigrun.blogspot.com/
Clovelly Crawler
1st May 2010
This years grueling coastal club challenge took place in near perfect conditions with threatened rain staying away. Mike Gilmore, Alan Heard, Steve Sanders, Alan Cox, Rob Floyd, Charlie Davis, Andy Pearson, Bill Siviter, Stuart Philps, Ian Clewes and Sue Pennington completed the full course to the Blues clubhouse whilst Kathryn Guard and Doug Jenkin took the less painful option, running from Bucks Mills. Andy Watts, Kay Dickinson and Doug and Brenda Birchell took the Peppercombe route back to the Blues. First back was Stuart Philps who managed to run the complete course an exceptional achievement as anyone who has ventured onto the coast path will know. Kathryn (Princess Fiona) Guard was first into the mens showers at the end of the race, closely followed by the men … but not before she had showered and dressed (those Blues men are such gentlemen). Special thanks to Janet Glover and Dee Jenkin for doing the driving bit and Barrie and Heardy for opening the bar at the end … it was like scene out of Ice Cold in Alex!

Not a virgin amongst them (I’m told) but everyone is bringing home a medal and rumour has it that Heardy owes Cloaky a tenner?

Jimmy Murray (1:36:25), Mark Palmer (1:58:08) and Kay Eastwood (2:24:08) took part in this inaugural half marathon at Tavistock. From all accounts a very tough run but well organised.

Bideford Half Marathon
Sunday 7 March 2010
Mark Jenkin was a worthy winner of the 16th Bideford Half Marathon, finishing the race in 1:10:59. Near perfect conditions greeted runners from as far afield as Freiburg in Germany and Atlanta in America whilst a dozen intrepid Irishmen (and women) journeyed from Lagan Valley, Belfast for the event.
Pipes and Drums, Samba bands and Morris Dancers entertained the crowds along the route and England goal keeper David James was spotted amongst the crowds of enthusiastic supporters (at 6’8″ you couldn’t really miss him).
North Devon Road Runners (above) turned out in force once again whilst our largest entry was from the Womens Running Network (57 runners) with Teignbridge Trotters (right) in second place (31 runners). Teignbridge kindly provided two pace men for the event and the 1:45 man came home in 1:44:40… impressive.
Bideford AAC fielded 50 runners and still managed to fully marshal the course, man the drinks stations, run the canteen, baggage lorry and start/finish. The work of our volunteers before during and after the event is much appreciated.

Malta Marathon
Sunday 28 February 2010
Another sub 3.00 hours for club runner Dave Braunton in this predominantly down hill marathon. Dave says he suffered when the temperature climbed to 24 degrees but he still managed to cross the line in 2.58.07. Well done Dave!
Hestercombe Humdinger 9.5 miler (what a daft distance!)
Sunday 21 February
Lois Vickers flew the Blues flag and finished in a respectable 1:45:41. Well done Lois!
Plymouth Hoe 10
Sunday 21st February
Martin Colwill was our only representative in the Plymouth 10 and missed out on a sub one hour time by just 10 seconds. That’s flippin fast! He came 22nd out of a field of 568. Well done Martin!
Great West Run Exmouth 5 Miler
Sunday 7 February
The Bideford six took on the Exmouth five. Lucky Martin Colwill (13th) finished the race in around 15 seconds less than his official time of 28.37, as did James McLaren 29.36, Maurice Cockwill 35.35, Alan Heard 37.14, Mike Gilmore 40.59 and Glen Martin 41.04 (apparently the timekeeper had a bit of trouble with his timing watch at the start).
Southern Counties Cross Country Championships Parliament Hill, London
A great day for the Blues! Out of a field of over 800 runners, Kevin Heywood won bronze, coming home in 51.39, only 42 seconds behind the winner! good runs too from Mark Jenkin (56.12-51st) Andrew Ingle (62.16-207th) and Chris Stone (71.03-481st).

Disney 5k, Half Marathon and Marathon
8, 9 and 10 January
A Murray mix competed in a variety of races at Disney World with Jim running both the Half Marathon (1:38:30) and Marathon (3:26:57) on consecutive days. Children Rob and Leonie competed in the 5k, finishing in 32min and 34 minutes (can’t believe that Rob didn’t wait for his li’l Sis ;)).
Jim tells us that the Marathon starts at 5.40 in the morning to avoid the heat of the sun. Unfortunately freak weather conditions meant that it was so cold that spilt water at the drinks stations was freezing on the ground! It’s also the first marathon that Jim has finished when it was still dark! Well done Team Murray!
First Chance 10k, Exeter
Sunday 3 January
Kevin Heywood (30-44) won this event with Mark Jenkin (32-27) finishing close behind in fifth place.
Kevin added another course record to his collection on his way to victory, making light of icy conditions to scoop a Β£100 bonus for a new best time.
